J.C. Houck, a nephew of the late Louis Houck whom he assisted in his railroad building enterprise in the early part of this century, died Saturday at St. Louis, where he had lived since retiring.

The Cape Girardeau School Board raises tuition fees for out-of-district pupils who will attend Cape Girardeau schools in the new school year; tuition is raised from $270 to $378 per year; there's a possibility that nonresident pupils may not be accepted at all a year from now.

Public Works Administration officials yesterday indicated they will recommend approval of a PWA grant to augment funds permitting construction of nearly four miles of supplementary pavement on U.S. 61 immediately west of Cape Girardeau; the pavement would extend from the end of Broadway south, parallel along the present highway to Highway 74.

A five-year lease has been taken by Willard H. Estes and Ed Deevers on a large residential building at 18 S. Sprigg St., and they will soon open an undertaking business there.

100 years ago: Aug. 8, 1910

Quite a number of pharmacists from various parts of the state are in Cape Girardeau to take examinations before the state board of pharmacy, which is in session at Academic Hall.

In the opinion of Thomas M. Roche, representing the American Asphaltum and Rubber Co. of Chicago, Cape Girardeau will soon have one of the best residence streets in the country; he is here to take charge of the work in putting in the asphalt binder on Lorimier Street.
