School work

GREAT timing, Cape Girardeau School District administrators. With less than a week to go before students return to school, crews show up to begin renovations, additions and improvements that voters approved in April. We've had all summer to complete this. Now, as underpaid teachers attempt to teach and students attempt to learn, hammers will bank, motors will roar and vehicles will beep.

Gambling is wrong

I have read several comments regarding the casino issue. When I read about so-called-Christians who support this I am appalled. Gambling is wrong. It destroys homes, causes families to break up and creates an unwholesome environment. How can any of those things be condoned by Christians? Not only should the casino be stopped, the bingo halls should be shut down, even the ones in church basements or sponsored by churches.

Thanks for kindness

THE homeless shelter thrift store at 707 Broadway helped me recently, and I want to say thanks. I had heard a lot of bad things about them, but when I was in need they showed a compassionate and caring heart to me. Thank you for being so kind.

Courteous help

I can see why the Safe House for Women thrift store is so successful. They have a nice, neat store manned with pleasant, courteous women to help. Some thrift stores are nothing more than junk shops similar to a flea market stall. Other thrift stores could learn a lesson from the Safe House for Women thrift store. Tidy up, and people will come.

Vote for casino

A couple who are members of the church that obtained signatures to put the casino vote on the ballot stated the reason they did so was to keep the riffraff out of Cape Girardeau. I thought Christians believed everyone was equal and they were to help their fellow man, not look down on them. The nicest friends I have made are people who work in casinos. I hope people will vote yes on the casino issue in Cape Girardeau. I think that would be the best thing for us.

Casino choice

I agree that gambling is a choice, and I choose not to have it in this town.

Great place

THANK you, Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department, for senior day at Cape Splash. Those of us who were there had a wonderful time. It's a great place. I hope you do it again for the seniors.

Extinction alert

REPUBLICANS are sacrificing long-term political-survival advantage for short-term political gain. Their cynical use of economic hard times to start finger-pointing and scapegoating -- stirring up what is becoming a nasty culture of ethnic hatred, denigrating the increasingly popular health insurance reform law by using misinformation and even jumping on the now popular bandwagon of bashing same-sex marriage -- will within 25 years render the party extinct.

Out of touch

THE first lady is on another extravagant vacation. The president and Mrs. Obama have been on more vacations in the past year than most average citizens take in 10 years. The administration is thumbing their noses at the American people who are suffering economically. "Let them eat cake" are the words that must be in the minds of president and first lady. They are woefully out of touch with most American people.

Casino benefits

I would love to know why the "church people" are so against a casino in Cape Girardeau. Just because a casino is here doesn't mean they have to go to it. So why should they be allowed to dictate to the rest of the city what we can and cannot have? I am not an avid gambler, but like so many others I have visited casinos as a form of entertainment. I have not lost my soul to one of these casinos. The people of Cape Girardeau should see what a huge opportunity this is as far as jobs and increased revenue. Maybe if we had gotten a casino several years ago we would not be paying higher property taxes, personal property taxes or higher water bills.

Real change

A recent caller lamented that the chance of the Republican Party taking control of the U.S. Senate has been slightly diminished. Most would disagree with this wishful assertion by an obvious out-of-touch liberal. Our country is in socialistic shambles, and we recognize that the Democrats' empty promises and failed policies are to blame. It's time for some real change.
