U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson of Cape Girardeau may face a challenge next year for the 8th District seat from former state treasurer Mel Carnahan of Rolla, Mo.

The Cape Girardeau County Commission presents awards in appreciation of emergency services to Philip Leible for 20 years of service with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and Charles Mills, for more than 36 years of service with the Cape Girardeau Fire Department, 11 of which he was chief.

50 years ago: Aug. 22, 1960

Tom Mullen of Cape Girardeau, a sales representative of a drug company, and his son, John Mullen, 17, a senior at Cape Catholic High School, have both acquired student pilot licenses and are in the process of learning to fly an airplane at the municipal airport.

Tacit approval is given by the city council for the appointment of a new Public Housing Authority, thereby reviving the long-dormant proposal to erect public housing in Cape Girardeau.

75 years ago: Aug. 22, 1935

Thieves stripped the fruit from more than a dozen peach trees Tuesday night in an orchard on the farm of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Weiss on Perryville Road; the couple discovered an estimated 40 or 50 bushels of fruit were stolen.

Locating an alleged illicit liquor still on the third floor of a building at 37 N. Water St. yesterday, federal agents seized the equipment and arrested the operator; the setup included a two-burner gasoline stove, a 40-gallon cooker and other apparatus; the still was broken up and, after kerosene was poured over the mash, it was hauled out and dumped in Water Street.

100 years ago: Aug. 22, 1910

The vitrified brick for the paving of Upper Broadway is being distributed along that street, and the work will be started in the near future; the brick paving will extend from Middle to Pacific streets.

Montecello Land Co. is preparing to auction off lots in its tract just north of the Normal School; the property is within a short distance of the streetcar line, and the streets have been macadamized and improved; the lot sale will be held Sept. 8.
