I agree with the comment about flip-flops and sunglasses being worn by area educators. The dress code guiding teachers today is completely different from only a few years ago when a teacher dressed as if a member of a respected profession. Today, many dress as if they work at a convenience store. They are not alone. The women who work at my doctor's office, including the nurses, dress much the same. Flip-flops are not appropriate footwear for anywhere outside the home. And don't get me started on men wearing them.

Use technology to help catch the bad guys, reduce crime and make a safer community for all of us. If you are innocent, you want to take this test.
Teacher flip-flops
TEACHERS have enough to deal with at the beginning of the school year learning the names, personalities and learning disabilities of a new group of students. They should have comfortable footwear. Teachers spend pretty much the entire day on their feet. Can we please focus on the progress individual students make each year instead of how they achieve in relation to their peers and what their teachers are wearing on their feet? If people would spend more time volunteering instead of judging, they might catch a clue.
Not the problem
AS a mother, I understand that it is hard to accept responsibility when your child makes poor choices. As a teacher, I will not take responsibility for my students' actions because I am wearing flip-flops. Parents need to quit making excuses for our children's actions and instead take responsibility for them. They are our children, and parents are supposed to be their role models.
Look to the board
AFTER reading all the comments regarding Jackson Middle School's segregated lunches, I believe Jackson residents who are concerned about the welfare of their children should attend some school board meetings. This lunch issue is the least of their concerns. If you don't like what is happening, look to the school board and or the administration. The community elects the school board, which OKs everything the administration sees fit to do. If you want change, you will have to change how decisions are made or who is making the decisions.
Get the facts
JOE Sullivan's Friday column should be required reading for everyone. It was excellent. If we would all concentrate more on getting the facts about something before we so totally jump to conclusions, it would be a much better place that we all live in.
Worth reading
I have always liked Joe Sullivan. Now I think he's better and better. His article on Aug. 20 is well worth the cost of the paper. If you haven't thrown that paper away, dig it out and read his column.

Taxpayer subsidy
I noticed in the paper that Cape Air is being praised for doing such a good job. I'm glad they're successful. I think it's a good thing for a lot of fliers. It's too bad that it's totally ignored in this editorial that taxpayers are subsidizing this service.
Need new ideas
MOST Missourians care about jobs also. Politicians in Cape Girardeau have been in office for years. Where are the jobs? It's time for new ideas.

WHAT a difference the start of a new school year makes in Cape Girardeau. With university students back, our streets are bustling again. Welcome back, Southeast Missouri State University students.
Getting benefits
I'M in my upper 70s and have seen a lot of changes in my lifetime. Social Security has benefited not only the elderly, but also has provided insurance for younger Americans who have been injured or suffer other disabilities. As Christians, aren't we called to support such endeavors? The same holds true for our health care program -- or is it just for the wealthy? Some people may have been misled to believe that if you are forced to buy insurance you will not have money to eat. That is the farthest thing from the truth. The government will subsidize anyone with a low income for insurance coverage. I think all people should be entitled to health care coverage regardless of previous conditions. Don't be misled by talk-show hosts who distort the facts.
Biomass flaws
THE proposed biomass project in Perry County has hit a snag. The EPA was correct in recognizing that these plants are not a source for renewable energy. This ruling does four things. It stops the taxpayers' subsidies, it saves trees, it reduces carbon emissions and it stops the high generating costs that would have been passed on to consumers.
Mothers win
CONCERNING the comment comparing senior citizen gamblers to unwed mothers having children: I have never gambled, do not gamble and probably never will, but even I can see a difference. Gamblers take a big risk to lose. Mothers don't. Most of them are eligible for welfare, WIC, food stamps and free medical expense at taxpayers' expense. They're much more likely to win monetarily.
Garbage system
IT'S been a few months since Cape Girardeau's new solid waste system started. I want to say how wonderful I think it is. Thanks, Cape.
