The Cpl. Mason O. Yarbrough Detachment 1081 of the Marine Corps League will be conducting a Sept. 11 vigil starting at 8 a.m. Sept. 11 on Freedom Corner at Broadway and West End Boulevard in Cape Girardeau. The event is being held to promote public remembrance of the people killed Sept. 11, 2001. Beginning at 8 a.m. there will be a flag-raising ceremony, which will have remarks made by Cape Girardeau Mayor Harry Rediger. Members of the Cape Girardeau fire and police departments will participate in the ceremonies throughout the day as a memorial representation of the "Fallen First Responders." Closing ceremonies are tentatively scheduled to begin with remarks made by a guest speaker at 6 p.m. Bagpipers will play the preceding the firing of the volleys, followed by a bugler sounding taps closing the day of ceremonies. All the day's activities are free and open to the public.
