Rock quarries

FRUITLAND residents: Are you aware of two rock quarries that are planned to be created near the I-55 and U.S. 61 interchange? Do you want this in your community with all the effect, it will have on our area?

What pride?

THIS is for the person who called in and said that they were proud of the fact that they had voted for President Obama because he has been doing such a wonderful job. Look at interest rates, gas prices, the unemployment rate and every other economic indicator and look at where it was before he came into office. Look at where it is now. How can you say that you're proud to have voted for him? I can't understand that at all. Our children can't find a job. Look at the number of foreclosures. Look at all the bailouts. Look at what he's done to health care. If you're in favor of the health care, you've got your head in the sand. There is absolutely not one thing that Obama has done that's been a positive move for this country, and I voted for him.

Choice category

CONGRATULATIONS to the Southeast Missouri People's Choice Award winners. I enjoy seeing how my favorite places stand up in the competition. I was sad to see our upscale thrift shop in the big barn between Cape Girardeau and Jackson didn't get honors. Safe Harbor needs a special category -- a thrift shop whose profits feed and house homeless cats and dogs. Donations come from animal lovers who want to help. Support our only local no-kill facility outside Fruitland. Next year I'd like to see a category for "Humane stylish thrift shops."

Loud ATVs

I am getting tired of people riding ATVs on the streets in Cape Girardeau. The noise is disturbing to everyone, let alone the legal problems they could cause for the city by riding on city property. Mason Street off Sprigg Street is particularly bad. I'm sure even a deaf policeman could hear these people.

Davenport's casino

MY family owns a bookstore two blocks from the riverfront casino in Davenport, Iowa. Except for the property the casino is on, there has been no sustained development or increased business in the surrounding district. My family thought great things would happen. Sadly, years later, refurbished buildings stand empty or struggle. Restaurants see no increased business, because gamblers can eat and drink cheaply at the casino. The downtown area continues to deteriorate. Family friends have developed gambling problems and have seen their lives go downhill or worse. The only truly shining light in their riverfront area is the beautiful minor-league baseball stadium full of families and full of life.

Band's halftime

YES, the Cape Central band is awesome. Yes, football crowds are rude when the band is playing. No, the band did not quit in the middle of its performance. The band only plays half of its competition routine in order to leave the audience wanting more. I guess it worked this time.

Thanks for help

MY youngest son rolled his vehicle on I-55 at the Cape Girardeau-Jackson exit. I want to thank the semi driver who stopped to assist. By the grace of God my son will be OK after suffering minor injuries. Thank you once again for your good deed.

Casino revenue

FOR those who are counting on the revenue from a casino, remember there's no such thing as a free lunch. If something seems to good to be true, it probably is. Remember back to when we were sold the bill of goods that legalizing gambling would take care of all financial issues in education because the money would go to education. Since then, schools have faced two rounds of extremely tight budgets, with schools laying off aides, teachers and other staff members. Things haven't turned out as we were told, and it's doubtful they will. If gambling was such a sure thing for a community or state, why are towns with casinos struggling just as much, if not more, than towns without?
