With fall-like weather arriving last night, SEMO District Fair officials are gearing up for large crowds tonight and Saturday, the final two days of the weeklong event; performing this evening will be Conway Twitty and his band.
Puxico, Mo., farmer Wayne Cryts says he is considering a 1986 bid for Congress from the 8th District against Republican incumbent Bill Emerson of Cape Girardeau.
The chamber of commerce manager of a western Missouri community once chosen as an "All-America City," Allen Robinson, is hired to manage the Cape Girardeau chamber; Robinson, who will take over duties of resigning manager Philip Kearney, is selected from a list of 128 applicants.
Attendance at the SEMO District Fair totals 2,391 people, down slightly from last year's opening-day numbers; 592 people take in the beauty pageant, when Lana Vickery, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Vickery of Chaffee, Mo., is crowned Queen of the Fair by Sen. Albert M. Spradling Jr.
It is announced that Missouri's Golden Troopers, the Cape Girardeau American Legion drum and bugle corps, will give its full 15-minute championship drill at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis on Sept. 22, before the opening of the St. Louis Cardinals-Chicago Cubs baseball game.
An attempt to burn the Hickory Grove School is revealed by J.L. Stovall, president of the board of that school; scorched "gunny" sacks and a bundle of newspapers, smelling of kerosene, were found in the building Sept. 3.
Postmaster E.W. Flentge is working out a scheme to secure the installation of mailboxes at every house in Cape Girardeau, where mail is now delivered by carriers; he is attempting to have the boxes installed by a business in the city, with no expense or trouble to residents.
Arthur Newell, clerk in the Bruening & Kerstner Mercantile at Jackson, leaves for St. Louis to purchase an automobile; while waiting for the train in Cape Girardeau, however, he is sold an automobile by a representative of the Vogel Auto Co.
