BLOOMFIELD, Mo. -- The Bloomfield School Board voted to not have a summer school session following the 2010-2011 school year due to a lack of state funding at its regular meeting Monday.

Superintendent Dr. Nicholas Thiele recommended the district not offer summer school in 2011. He said he had recently attended a Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education meeting, and they had told school districts that there would not be funding for summer school next year.

High school principal Eric Boles said the district had programs in place after regular school hours to tutor or help students.

Thiele said the after-school program was funded by Title I federal money, which was not cut.

A board member asked if the funding came through from the state for summer school whether the board could reverse the decision and reinstate summer school. Thiele said the board could change the decision as late as March, but he didn't want teachers or students who needed credit recovery to depend on a summer school session.

The board voted 5-0 to not offer summer school following the 2010-11 school year. Board members voting in favor of the proposal were Pulley, President Don Lafferty, Bill Robison, Ryan Mayo and John Newell. Board members Dave Cooper and David Battles were not present.
