NEW HAMBURG, Mo. -- Owners of a New Hamburg grocery store reported up to 40 cartons of cigarettes and their cash register stolen Thursday morning, according to the Scott County Sheriff's Department.

Branden Caid, sheriff's office investigator, said the break in at Kern's Grocery occurred overnight and because there was no forced entry, they believe a door to the business was left unlocked.

Although there was no evidence left at the scene, Caid said the sheriff's office does have leads in the case.

"I don't know whether it's a good lead or not, it came in within the last hour or so," he said around 2:15 p.m. Thursday.
