The Cape Girardeau Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 419 S. Sprigg St. Tuesday at 11: 47 p.m. According to a news release issued by the department, upon arrival firefighters saw moderate smoke showing from the structure. They were able to extinguish the fire and contain it to the living room area and portions of the ceiling...

The Cape Girardeau Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 419 S. Sprigg St. Tuesday at 11: 47 p.m. According to a news release issued by the department, upon arrival firefighters saw moderate smoke showing from the structure. They were able to extinguish the fire and contain it to the living room area and portions of the ceiling.

The news release said the occupant told firefighters there was no electric service going to the house and she had lit a candle in the living room for light before falling asleep. She and her child were able to exit the house safely.

The fire department said there was light fire and smoke damage to the house, and damage is estimated at $5,000.
