Speak Out 10/11/10
THE Southeast Missourian article on extending the school year dealt with the issue of who would pay for the extension. My answer: cut out all sports for schools. Look at the millions we would have. Sports only help a few. Have you seen all the fights at games broadcast on TV? Then on another page in the paper, "Haiti waiting for $1.15 billion in aid for their country." We don't have the money to help everyone. Shouldn't our country and our children's education come first? God bless America...Cut sports

JOE Sullivan's was one of the first columns that I would read in the newspaper. He must be a wonderful human being, and they're going to miss him down there. I'm going to miss him, too.
Church for everyone
THIS is to the author of the speak out comment that said church is just for the unchurched. I don't feel that's true. Although most churches welcome unchurched people, we're all sinners. A Christian is just a sinner saved by grace.
Drug database
IF a community passes a prescription ordinance, then the pharmacist will not have to participate in the electronic database and abusers will attempt to obtain pseudoephedrine in the same manner they obtain legal controlled substances. Most meth or precursors come across from Mexico.

I love roulette, I always pick black. Opponents of gambling don't know jack.
Disabled recognition
KUDOS to Jackson R2 for their efforts to get our youths to recognize the disabled. One never knows if a family member or friend may become disabled. Someone I care a lot about has been homebound for the last 11 months. The people who experience this setback are everyday citizens. Keep up the great work, Jackson Schools!
Fiscally sound city
GREAT job to the City of Cape Girardeau for coming in under budget. It is so nice to live in a thriving community, especially when much of our nation is in a recession. Cape Girardeau residents are truly blessed.

TARP success
TARP (Toxic Asset Relief Program) worked. It saved this country from what would have surely been another Great Depression. Its cost to taxpayers (originally $700 billion) will only be a fraction of what the cost of inaction would have been, and some say it may actually end up turning a profit.
Political landscape
THE political nature of Cape Girardeau is such that libertarianism will trump moralistic musings, and a proposed Cape Girardeau casino will receive a strong voter mandate.
School stop signs
I am sick of the Jefferson Elementary School stop signs being up way past school hours. They should go up before school and down after school. A lot of the times the parking lot will be empty but the two stop signs on Minnesota Street will still be up, sometimes past 6 p.m. It's very frustrating. They used to have the safety patrol there when I went to school at Jefferson. That took care of the problem.
Health care discounts
EVERYDAY you pick up the newspaper there is an article about health care and what can be done to cut spending. I understand that not only do the employees at our local hospitals have great health care coverage, they also receive a huge discount on the services they receive after the insurance has paid their part. Is this another reason hospitals overcharge for services? Are services being overcharged so the employees can keep the benefits of others?
National debt
ACCORDING to the government accounting office, the amount of debt Americans are facing as a result of government commitments is $53 trillion -- $175,000 per American. It isn't too late to save the land of the free and it starts with understanding the difference between policies that promote freedom and those that advanced the socialism of President Obama.
Accident help
MY son was hit in a motorcycle accident today at William Street and Sheridan Drive. I want to thank all the people that stopped to help, especially the ones that stayed with him. Thanks for all the prayers. He's going to be OK. He'll be laid up for a while, but I'm thankful for the support.
Too sedentary
OUR society is far too sedentary, particularly when compared to other countries. So as to get us to walk at least a little bit more, I call upon the Cape Girardeau City Council to join with other communities in our country and pass an ordinance doing away with all retail drive-throughs.
