A 32-year-old Sikeston, Mo., died Sunday after jumping off a bridge at Old Appleton, the Perry County Sheriff's Department said.

The department received a call shortly before 7 p.m. from a woman saying she was at the red bridge and that the man had not surfaced after jumping into Apple Creek.

The Perry County and Cape Girardeau County sheriff's departments responded, as well as the Perry County Rural Fire Department, East Perry County Rural Fire Department, and Cape Girardeau Fire Department dive team.

The man was found by the dive team at about 8:30 p.m. near where he had jumped in.

"The water temperature is not that high this time of year," Perry County Sheriff Gary J. Schaaf said in a news release, "and one could easily succumb to hypothermia. It is, after all, October. And it is marked clearly on both ends that jumping from the bridge is not allowed."

The subject's name isn't being released until the family has been notified by Perry County Coroner Herb Miller.
