BLOOMFIELD, Mo. -- A Sikeston, Mo., man is behind bars in the Stoddard County Jail following a weekend altercation in Bloomfield.

According to a probable-cause statement by deputy Larry Vandeven, at 9:30 p.m. Friday the Stoddard County Sheriff's Department received a call about an altercation at a Bloomfield gas station between Greg Day, 35, and a man and woman Day encountered in a vehicle at the service station.

The report said Day had beaten his fist against the window glass of the vehicle occupied by the couple and had then brandished a handgun.

When the couple left the station, Day reportedly followed their vehicle, at one point striking it in the rear with his own. Day allegedly then pulled alongside the other vehicle and fired a single shot into it, which struck the rear left quarter panel of the vehicle, the report says.

Vandeven, and Missouri State Highway Patrol officer Levi Rawson, stopped both vehicles a short time later and searched Day's vehicle, and found a Smith and Wesson .22-caliber handgun and an open bottle of beer. Once the weapon was recovered, Day reportedly admitted to firing the handgun and was placed under arrest.

Day is charged with the first-degree assault for firing the weapon armed criminal action.

He remains in the Stoddard County Jail under a cash-only bond of $50,000 and is scheduled for arraignment before Judge Joe Z. Satterfield this morning.
