Chaffee yielded three touchdowns in the final six minutes of the second quarter and fell 49-10 to Valle Catholic in a showdown for the Class 1 District 2 title Thursday in Ste. Genevieve, Mo.
The loss ended a two-game winning streak for Chaffee, which closed its regular season at 4-6 and will appear in the state playoffs for the first time in 27 years when it faces Thayer in a first-round game Wednesday.
Chaffee trailed 7-3 after Jordan Yahn booted a 17-yard field goal in the first quarter, but the Warriors (9-1) increased the lead to 14-3 in the closing seconds on a 7-yard run by quarterback Alex Stohl.
The Red Devils had a short field goal attempt blocked with 5 minutes, 30 seconds left in the second quarter and Valle seized the momentum.
The Warriors' Zach Weiler returned punts 68 and 72 yards for touchdowns, and running back Luke Uding ran 37 yards for a score for a 42-3 halftime lead.
"The last five and a half minutes of the first half killed us," Chaffee coach Charlie Vickery said. "Up to that point we played pretty decent."
Chaffee struggled to rush the ball, accumulating just 59 yards on 36 carries. Junior running back Tyson Estes, who had back-to-back 200 yard games coming in, carried 17 times for 15 yards.
Yahn completed 10 of 19 passes for 126 yards. .
Alex Davie had four receptions for 76 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter.
