Area anglers will have the opportunity to fish for rainbow trout starting Monday as part of the Missouri Department of Conservation's winter rainbow trout fishing program at Jackson's Rotary Lake. From now until Feb. 1, all fishing is on a catch-and-release basis. After February, anglers may harvest up to four fish.

In the days leading up to the start of the program, about 1,900 rainbow trout, including some lunkers, or particularly large fish, were stocked in the lake. The trout were bought by the city and the Department of Conservation.

Jackson Parks and Recreation director Shane West Anderson said the program has been successful since its start in 2003.

"I wasn't prepared for the interest shown by the fishing people of the area. Everybody had an opinion and shared it with me about fishing and the addition of rainbow trout to Rotary Lake," he said.

Anderson said most people have been positive about the program. He said one fisherman told him he came from Kansas to participate in the program.

For Anderson, the program is more than an opportunity to catch the cold-water fish; it's a chance for people to enjoy nature.

"I see family members and friends together in a beautiful park sharing outdoor time. That is what our park is all about. That outdoor park experience is the one that didn't get away," he said.

All anglers between the ages of 16 and 64 must have a valid Missouri fishing license. During the catch-and-release portion of the program, anglers may use only one fishing rod at a time and may only use fish with flies, artificial lures and unscented baits. Chum is not permitted.

After February anyone harvesting trout must possess a trout permit, in addition to the Missouri license. There are no limitations on bait during harvesting.
