Toybox applications accepted beginning today

Now that the pumpkins are put away, volunteers with the Jaycees and Southeast Missourian Toybox Program are focusing on making Christmas merrier for families in need.

Applications from families will be accepted from today through Nov. 23 in person at The Salvation Army, 701 Good Hope St.

This will be the 36th year for the annual Toybox program. Last year Toybox served 475 families by providing gifts to more than 1,200 children, said Tracy Haggerty, Toybox organizer.

Since the downturn in the economy, Toybox has been challenged with increasing needs and a drop in donations.

"The past couple of years have really exhausted the cushion in our budget as an organization, as we have dipped into savings to make up for fewer donations and greater need in our area," she said. "We hope to exceed the donations brought in last year to help maintain our capabilities to reach out to so many members in our community."

Donations of new toys unwrapped are appreciated and accepted at drop locations throughout Cape Girardeau from mid-November through mid-December.

"Monetary donations are also crucial to the success of our program to purchase those items that we lack to fill the needs of all age groups and genders," Haggerty said.

Financial contributions may be mailed to P.O. Box 4, Cape Girardeau, MO 63703 or brought to the Southeast Missourian, 301 Broadway.
