Cauble & Field Vegetables & Groceries has purchased a freezer building on Highway 74, just west of South Sprigg Street from Central Foods Inc.; Central Foods was formerly active in the meat packing business, but the operation has been closed for some time.

50 years ago: Dec. 1, 1960

Cost of the proposed additional two lanes of U.S. 61 pavement through Cape Girardeau is estimated at $1,500,000 by the State Highway Department in a report on the project; the total pavement width under the modernization program will be 50 feet.

The Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce has had published and will distribute to residents here a billfold-sized card crammed with facts and figures about the city and its assets; the chamber hopes every citizen will be a salesman for the town.

75 years ago: Dec. 1, 1935

Marvin Niblack of Jackson has been granted a license to preach by the Cape Girardeau district conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South; he has for several years been a leader in Methodist young people's work in the district.

Mattie Schrock has opened The Kitchen Bakery and Delicatessen at 811 Broadway, two doors west of the Broadway Theater; it serves home-baked pies and cakes.

100 years ago: Dec. 1, 1910

The Cairo & Thebes Railroad is thrown open to the public in the morning by the putting on of a mixed passenger and freight train for two round trips daily between Cairo, Ill., and the big bridge at Thebes, Ill.; after arrangements are made with the other roads crossing the bridge, no doubt regular passenger and freight trains will be run and several of the railroads will enter Cairo over the new road.

The McElroy Electrical Co. is installed in its elegant home in the new Grissom building at the corner of Broadway and Spanish Street.
