Ameren fighting to recover $30M from firm

ST. LOUIS -- Ameren Missouri continues to fight for recovery of more than $30 million from one of its insurers after a federal judge in St. Louis threw out a lawsuit against Energy Insurance Mutual Ltd.

U.S. District Judge Carol Jackson says she dismissed the case because the insurer's contract with Ameren calls for arbitration before a lawsuit can be filed.

A 700-foot section of the dam at Ameren's Taum Sauk reservoir collapsed five years ago and released more than a billion gallons of water.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Ameren sought reimbursement under a $100 million policy it purchased from Energy Insurance Mutual. The lawsuit said the company had paid Ameren $68.7 million as of June 15.

The utility says it has paid out almost $200 million in settlements.
