Emerson's chief of staff, Jeffrey Connor, said Thursday the Republican congresswoman was injured while preparing to host a dinner Saturday at her home. He said Emerson broke the humerus in her left arm.

Because of the injury, Emerson did not attend President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech earlier this week in Washington, D.C. Connor said she watched the speech, as well as the Republican and the tea party responses, on television.
