PASS or fail, the smoking ban proposal is a horrifying prospect. Not all issues should be voted on. It doesn't matter if 51 percent of the voting populace wants a restaurant to be smoke free; it only matters if the owner of the restaurant wants it to be smoke free...

Double standard?
HOW come when Palin invokes the word "blood libel" everyone jumps on the "Palin is an idiot" bandwagon, but when a Democrat (Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn.) uses the same term, we barely hear about it?
Smoking ads
REGARDING the smoking ban, I love that the advertisements on the radio are interviewing people from New Orleans, a major tourist city. Of course those places of business are doing fine, they have millions of visitors every year. Please at least use an ad that can relate to our city.
Smoking policy option
IF a restaurant doesn't want smoking in their establishment, they should put a sign on the front door that says "Smoke Free Establishment." I've seen this kind of sign before at hospitals, doctors offices, etc. So why ask only the residents of Cape Girardeau to vote on an issue that affects a lot more people than those who will be able to vote? Let the businesses decide for themselves.
Clean the sidewalks
I went to the Cape Public Library last Friday and was very disappointed that no one had cleaned off the sidewalks. People had to walk through the snow and ice to get to the library. As a senior citizen, I think this is very dangerous.

Great columns
SAM Blackwell's "letters from home" are so insightful and beautifully written. I wonder if he has thought of publishing a book of his collected "letters?" I really believe they should be shared with people outside the heartland.
Light problem
WILL someone please look into the left-turn streetlight at the intersection of Mount Auburn Road turning onto Bloomfield Road? At night, if there is no one else at the intersection, the light will not change. Then another car comes to another lane and their light changes instantly.
Makeup days
I am really disappointed that the Cape Girardeau Public School Board passed a calendar that has most of our mandated snow makeup days scheduled over spring break. Adding any necessary makeup days to the end of the school year would make much more sense. Families cannot make any travel plans without expensive cancellations or skipping school.
Noise problem
Regarding noise levels downtown, home buyers should be told of the problem with sound levels before they buy. Just like you would tell them if the roof leaked or if the basement floods when it rains.
Education cuts
THE governor wants to slash education funding, and Missouri has the lowest state tobacco tax in the nation. How utterly disgraceful.
