Three people have been released from custody pending a review of events that involved a gun being fired into the ground Thursday night in downtown Cape Girardeau, police said Friday. Police initially responded Thursday night to the downtown area to break up a fight in the Hutson's Fine Furniture parking lot, department spokesman Darin Hickey said. Police heard what they believed was a gunshot and they immediately noticed a vehicle quickly leaving the area, he said. They stopped the vehicle and took the people into custody. Police believe the gun was fired into the ground, Hickey said. A .22-caliber pistol was recovered, and it is believed someone tossed the pistol from the car. They were arrested, but released Friday morning. No charges have been filed, he said. The Cape Girardeau County prosecuting attorney's office is reviewing the incident before deciding whether to file charges.
