A 12-person committee was selected Thursday night as more than 125 sportsmen gathered at the VFW hall in Scott City to discuss the possibility of obtaining a large Department of Conservation lake.

Cpl. Ronald W. Jones, a Cape Girardeau County native who has been with the Missouri Highway Patrol for 20 years, has assumed public safety education duties for Southeast Missouri; Jones became assistant safety education officer in September after Sgt. Joe G. Matthews became ill.

50 years ago: March 1, 1961

Trinity Lutheran School's cheerleaders were picked as champions from among Cape Girardeau's elementary schools by the schools' basketball coaches; the squad is composed of Bonnie Strom, Jean Siemers, Emma Jo Pensel, Patricia Johnson, Judy Schrader, Della Dee Heise and Cheri Huckstep.

A general nursing program for registered nurses will be offered at State College beginning the fall semester of this year; the college already offers the associate of arts degree in basic nursing.

75 years ago: March 1, 1936

Leap Day was observed yesterday in Cape Girardeau with a special movie presentation at the Fox Broadway Theater for those celebrating their birthdays that day, and a dance for the celebrants was held in the evening at the Armory.

The Jackson High Indians won the right to represent the sixth district at the state basketball meet in Columbia, Mo., by defeating the Central High Tigers in the finals of the regional tournament in Houck Field House last night, 21-15; the Fornfelt Bearcats captured third place by trimming the College High Preps, 22-14.

100 years ago: March 1, 1911

About 75 couples enjoyed the masked ball in the Anderson Hall on Good Hope Street last night, splendid music being furnished by the Kassell orchestra; the best costume prize for ladies went to Mrs. J.F. Lawler, while F.A. Kuntz carried off the men's prize.

Brother Richard Madigan, who was a member of the staff of St. Vincent's College for 65 years, died at age 95; he was born in Ireland but spent most of his life in Cape Girardeau.
