SEYMOUR, Mo. -- Webster County authorities say an Army veteran became enraged and shot his mother and tried to shoot his father after they would not acknowledge that he was the reincarnated Jesus.

Sheriff Roye Cole said Zakariah Jacob Evitt was jailed Wednesday on $500,000 bond on two counts of felonious assault and one count of armed criminal action.

Cole says the 26-year-old Evitt, who served in the Army in Afghanistan and Korea, began shooting Tuesday at a home he shared with his parents. He fled and was captured in Greene County.

His father was not injured. His mother was treated and released from a Springfield hospital.

Cole said Evitt's father said his son hadn't slept for days before the shooting.

Court records do not indicate that Evitt has a lawyer.
