CAPE Girardeau is living in the dark ages. A smoking ban for our city would be the best possible thing to ever happen to Cape Girardeau. I travel all over the U.S. and internationally, and most places I go are completely smoke-free. Most college towns are smoke-free. Airports are smoke-free. It would give us a better rating in the quality-of-life reports...

Teacher tenure

WHAT a disgrace. No tenure for teachers. Four years seeking a bachelor's degree. Two years working on a master's degree and extra credit. The amount of money spent on college is outrageous. Should teachers be judged on the students' grades? Some students are just not smart. No amount of teaching will help them. They need to be put in special education classes and receive help from their parents.

Energy independence

I received a card from Ameren about Senate Bill 50. I think it is a great idea, especially now since we seem to be under the thumb of foreign oil again. Less than $2 a year, staying here in America and producing our own energy sounds good to me.

Blame game

WHOSE fault are the gas prices now? Everybody's trying to blame it on the president.

Dress appropriately

PLEASE, ladies. Low riders are for teens. Wear pants that are age-appropriate.

Teacher pay

THE idea of paying teachers based on their students' performance is wrong. They should be given pay as to how many years they have worked. You cannot pay a teacher less because she has students who are having a harder time learning. This has to do with the parents of the students.

School reform

SCHOOL reform is driven by corporate concerns, attempts at reducing what's important in education to numbers, scores on standardized achievement tests, and the targeting of teachers as culprits if a student fails to achieve. In a nutshell, this is why the school reform effort has gone so horribly wrong.

Union controversy

WISCONSIN Gov. Walker's effort to completely eliminate the heretofore legal right of public employees to collectively bargain has been such an unmitigated disaster. I can only hope that the Missouri GOP doesn't follow suit.
