Sikeston home show this weekend

MINER, Mo. -- This weekend, an event that has been absent from the Sikeston scene for almost two decades will return -- and organizers couldn't be more excited.

The Sikeston Board of Realtors Home and Garden Show will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Miner Convention Center. It will feature about 40 booths with a variety of products.

"If you are involved in new construction, own a home and are remodeling or just want to snack on some good food, this show is for you," said Sharon Medlin, president of the Sikeston Board of Realtors. "We've got a real wide variety of vendors, and there is something for everyone."

A majority of the businesses are from Sikeston-Miner, with several other from Southeast Missouri communities.

Cookware demonstrations, plants, home scents and more will also be on display. "It's not just about building or remodeling a home," said Medlin.

Samantha Jarrett of First Midwest Bank in Sikeston, an affiliate member of the Board of Realtors, agreed. She encourages anyone considering purchasing a home to come out -- not only to get ideas, but to get an idea of the resources available to them on their house hunt.

"We'll have banks, title companies, real estate companies and insurance companies there," she said.

Jarrett pointed out that the landscaping advice could also be beneficial for many renters, as some landlords allow renters to plant.

The Home & Garden Show is a real opportunity to showcase what area merchants have to offer, too.

"We think it's going to be an exciting time for people who would like to see what is available in the area," said Samantha Cooper, a Realtor at Century 21 in Sikeston. She pointed out that as of Tuesday, most of the booths were reserved, and she anticipates all of them will be rented by the weekend.

Medlin, who set up a booth at the recent Home & Garden Show in Cape Girardeau with her husband, said there were several inquiries following that show.

"There will be landscapers there with a lot of good spring ideas," said Cooper, noting they and some other booths will have items at the show available for purchase.

Not only that, all of the vendors will have the latest items and trends to share with the public, said Medlin.

Additionally, some of the vendors have indicated they plan to do giveaways throughout the show, said Jarrett. Organizers said they expect around 2,500 people to come through.

A longtime Sikeston resident, Jarrett said she's excited to see how the show turns out.

"This is something that used to be done all the time 20 plus years ago," Jarrett said. "We really wanted to revive that Home and Garden Show that used to be here -- it's just great to have all the people in a community come together in one spot."

Admission to the show is free and open to the public. However, donations will be taken, and all proceeds will benefit the local Habitat for Humanity.
