All the local high school events reported Thursday to the Southeast Missourian.

It looked innocent enough when Perryville's Jared Hotop earned a two-out walk with a runner on third base during the sixth inning Thursday.

Hotop hit first base and kept going, heading for second.

The move jolted the De Soto defense, and the Pirates capitalized on the confusion to score the winning run as Hotop headed for second.

The Pirates added an insurance run in the inning to defeat the Dragons 5-3.

Perryville improved to 3-0.

De Soto starting pitcher Eduardo Oquendo, the son of former Cardinals infielder Jose Oquendo, struck out six over the first five innings, relying heavily on a cutter. But Oquendo gave way to Nick Richman, who suffered the loss.

Jake Dobbelare earned the win for the Pirates. He struck out four over four innings in relief.

Perryville returns to action Saturday when it hosts Oak Ridge.
