Five local players selected to academic all-state team

Five local high school basketball players recently were named to the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association's academic all-state team.

Scott City's Corey Rodgers, Saxony Lutheran's Gus Klaus, Jackson's Zach McDowell, Delta's Rachel Bartels and Perryville's Natalie Bauwens all were named to the teams.

To be eligible, a player must be a senior, have started 90 percent of his or her team's games or played 75 percent of the total team quarters played, boast a grade-point average of 3.25 or better and achieved at least one of the following: ACT score of 27 composite or better; SAT score of 1210 composite or better; PSAT score of 185 selection index or better.

Klaus averaged 19.7 points and 3.9 rebounds for the Crusaders. He added 1.6 steals and 1.9 assists per game.

McDowell averaged 9.9 points and 4.7 rebounds per game for the Indians. He also dished out 3.1 assists per game.

Bartels helped lead the Bobcats to the Class 1 sectional round. She averaged 15 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 2.8 assists per game.

Bauwens, a three-year starter, led the Pirates by averaging 14.6 points and 11.2 rebounds this season.
