An Illinois man was transported to a hospital with serious injuries Monday afternoon following a rollover accident on Interstate 55. An Illinois man died Monday after being transported to a hospital with serious injuries following a rollover accident on Interstate 55.

Darin Clifford, 48, of Maryville, Ill., was driving a Chevrolet truck that veered off the left side of the interstate and overcorrected, causing the vehicle to overturn near mile marker 104. Clifford had to be extricated from his vehicle, drawing law enforcement from Jackson and fire crews from Jackson and Cape Girardeau.

The accident occurred just after 2:15 p.m.

Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Clifton said Clifford was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Traffic was still moving slowly through the area around 4:15 p.m., as the Missouri Department of Transportation worked to repair the road sign announcing the Fruitland and Jackson exit.

Jackson Police Department Sgt. Scott Eakers said Clifford clipped the bottom of sign, bending an i-beam.
