Cape Girardeau city officials are looking at leasing 70 acres just west of the existing landfill as a new landfill site; property owner Ross Young is willing to lease the tract to the city at a cost of $2,500 per month for a minimum of 10 years.

50 years ago: April 21, 1961

Work on the 15 1/2-mile link of Interstate 55 in Cape Girardeau County may begin May 1; a spokesman for the R.B. Potashnick and D.L. Harrison companies, which hold the contract jointly, says advance preparations are being made but actual work cannot start until a formal order is issued by the State Highway Department.

William A. Boitnott has been named manager of the Public Finance office, 14 N. Spanish St.; he joined the company in 1955 in Cape Girardeau.

75 years ago: April 21, 1936

Members of the Cape Girardeau School Board last night discussed whether to call an election to ballot on a bond issue that would fund construction of a new Lorimier School even if a Public Works Administration grant isn't secured; still hopeful, however, members decide to delay the action at least two or three weeks to attempt to learn whether government funds will be received.

Chamber of Commerce secretary W.F.D. Batjer has been given authority to sign a contract with the Southeast Missouri Teachers Association to sponsor the visit of Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd to Cape Girardeau for lectures during the district teachers meeting here in October; the chamber will help finance the visit of the famous explorer.

100 years ago: April 21, 1911

Will Finnley, for a year and more a clerk at Rogers' Broadway Pharmacy, left yesterday for Indianapolis, where he will enter school for a general education; he is succeeded as clerk by Earl Tibbs.

The Ford automobile company received another carload of vehicles yesterday and all have been sold and delivered; one was sent to Benton, Mo., one to Kelso, Mo., and one to S.M. McAtee at Jackson.
