Southern Brothers play with Jackson band

The Southern Brothers will be the featured entertainment at Thursday's Jackson Municipal Band concert at the band shell in the Jackson City Park. This will be a special extended concert, with the Southern Brothers' portion of the event beginning at 7 p.m., followed by the Municipal Band at 8 p.m. The Southern Brothers have sung, recorded and performed a melting pot of gospel tunes ranging from Southern Gospel, country, bluegrass and other styles of music mixed with tight harmonies for more than 20 years. The municipal band's portion of the concert will consist of a variety of music that will include overtures, marches, show tunes and some rock 'n' roll. Those attending should bring a blanket and lawn chairs for seating.

Roller Girls hold open practice, info session

The Cape Girardeau Roller Girls, the only roller derby league in Southeast Missouri, will hold an open practice and information session for those interested in learning more about roller derby from 6 to 9 p.m. June 17 at the Arena Building. Participants will be able to talk to current skaters, ask questions and try some skating. No skating experience is necessary. Those wishing to skate must bring a valid photo ID and a mouth guard, which can be purchased at Walmart. Sikeston farmers market includes music

SIKESTON, Mo. -- The Sikeston Downtown Farmers' Market will host a Bluegrass Jam at 8:30 a.m. June 18. Pickers and singers can join members of Jordan's Tide to participate. Listeners can bring chairs and blankets to sit and enjoy the music. The jam will be in Legion Square Park on Malone Avenue next to the Depot Museum. Sondheim's 'Company' coming to Cape West

Wehrenberg Theaters will present the Tony Award-winning musical "Company," with Cape West 14 Cine offering the Stephen Sondheim production at 1 p.m. June 19. The musical features an all-star cast -- including Neil Patrick Harris, Jon Cryer and Stephen Colbert -- and the music of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. It was recorded live in May at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall in New York City. Tickets are $18 each and are available at www.wehrenberg.com.

*** Southeast professor's work in film festival

A Southeast Missouri State University faculty member's 3-D animated short film has been accepted into the International Short Film Festival Detmold 2011 in Germany. Peter Chanthanakone, an assistant professor of computer graphics and multimedia at Southeast, will attend the festival, which runs through Monday, in Detmold, Germany. His film, "Death to the Different," was selected for inclusion in the festival from more than 3,500 short films received, from more than 75 countries across the globe. "Death to the Different" was created at Southeast by students from the School of Polytechnic Studies under the direction of Chanthanakone. Chanthanakone chose the story and began outlining the film in April 2008. He and a team of students began creating the film in January 2009 after receiving financial support from Southeast's Grants and Research Funding. The film lasts a little under nine minutes and is based on "The Last Dragon," a book by David Hayes.
