Emergency construction of two bridges was approved by the county court Monday, enabling county officials to avoid lengthy bidding periods; concrete spans will be constructed on county roads 471 and 401; they will replace structures destroyed in flooding May 16.

The commander of the Salvation Army here for the last four years will move with his wife later this month to a new post in Alma, Mich.; Capt. Ralph A. Ashcraft and his wife, Joann, will report to their new post on June 25; coming to Cape Girardeau will be newly commissioned Army Lt. Nathaniel Johnson.

50 years ago: June 10, 1961

Dennis M. Scivally, designer of Cape Girardeau's system of outer drives, promoter of highway beautification and a force for better roads in Southeast Missouri for 50 years, dies at a local hospital; Scivally, 82, had been in failing health for the past year.

Thomas C. Holshouser of Cape Girardeau has been awarded a degree in architecture from the David Rankin Technical Trades School in St. Louis; he will be associated with John L.E. Boardman, architect.

75 years ago: June 10, 1936

John A. Ferguson of Cape Girardeau is named a member of the State Public Service Commission by Gov. Guy B. Park, filling a vacancy created by the recent resignation of George H. English of Kansas City.

T.J. McGinty, superintendent of Southeast Missouri Hospital, is trying to buy a pair of guinea pigs but can't locate any on the local market; the hospital, which uses the animals extensively for laboratory tests, wants a pair so that more can be raised.

100 years ago: June 10, 1911

M.E. Lesem, proprietor of the Bierwirth Cigar Co., has filed an application with the secretary of state for a change in name to Lesem Cigar Co., and for an increase of capital stock; this is one of the fastest growing concerns in Cape Girardeau, with the work force having increased from four or five to 30 employees.

Mr. and Mrs. Edmund S. Hoch of Chicago arrive on the steamer Cape Girardeau; they're here to visit Hoch's brother, Phillip A. Hoch.
