Mid-America Sod Farm of Sikeston and Bell City, Mo., has established an operation in Cape Girardeau and plans to eventually consolidate all of its sod farms here; the new sod farm is on the George Heuer farm, about a half-mile north of the Cape Girardeau Municipal Golf Course.

Ground was officially broken for the new full-service branch of First Federal Savings and Loan yesterday; the office will be between West Park Mall and Walmart at the intersection of Route K and Silver Springs Road.

50 years ago: June 28, 1961

Film star Debbie Reynolds is the main attraction when some filming is done on a canal near the Mississippi River and some distance north of Cairo, Ill., as scenes are shot for the big movie attraction "How the West Was Won"; interested residents of Charleston and Commerce, Mo., and many other places, drop in to see the work.

Bruce McSwain hits a grand slam home run and pitches the Braves to a 14-10 victory over the Red Sox in the Illmo-Scott City Little League game here; the Braves connect for 14 hits, while the Red Sox get nine.

75 years ago: June 28, 1936

An evangelistic meeting of at least a week's duration begins at First Baptist Church under the direction of the Rev. Albert Rosoff and his son, the Rev. Daniel Rosoff, Jewish evangelists of Memphis, Tenn.

With temperatures soaring to 101 degrees, Cape Girardeau residents flock to the municipal swimming pool by the hundreds seeking relief from the heat.

100 years ago: June 28, 1911

Cape Girardeau County is becoming noted for its splendid roads and bridges; a large steel bridge has just been completed across Apple Creek at the Renner ford by the Brookfield Bridge Co., with a 90-foot span and a 30-foot approach; on the upper Egypt Mills road, at the Juden farm, a new 18-foot steel span has been erected on the old stone foundation; and the old wooden stringers and floor on the Borgfeld bridge, across Byrd's Creek, have been replaced with steel stringers and a new floor.

Dr. Benjamin R. Hempstead, a member of the Cape Girardeau City Council and a prominent physician, is in critical condition at the local hospital following an operation for appendicitis last night.
