Beard was a two-sport athlete at Division III Wisconsin-Platteville, where he lettered in football and basketball.

Beard set single-season school passing records in attempts, completions and yards gained as quarterback his senior year.

Beard lettered four years in basketball and was a member of two national championship teams coached by Bo Ryan, currently the coach at Wisconsin.

Beard replaces Lorenzo Brinkley, who left to become offensive coordinator for Kirkwood High School in suburban St. Louis.
