Homeless children

AFTER watching the "60 Minutes" coverage of homeless children, I could never be or even think like a Republican. My heart goes out to these children, not the greedy Republicans with their tax breaks for the rich and Big Business. I don't know how they can live with themselves. Only if they think of no one but themselves could they.

Robotic candidate

REINCE Priebus, elitist country club head of the Republican National Committee, recently said President Obama is a "... scripted and plasticized president." I wonder what Priebus would have to say about Republican presidential aspirant Mitt Romney. Romney's movements remind me of a robot and his flip-flops of Flipper.

Tattoos, piercings

GOD has created all of us. I just don't believe he has made so many mistakes as for all those that say they are coming out of the closet. I believe he has done his job of creating us, but I do not believe we are following what we should be. I believe it is a mental breakdown. We used to try to look our best. Today it is how you can look with all the tattoos, body piercings, etc. Who would hire someone like that?

Positive reforms

IT was heartwarming to read Jon Rust's column about Saint Francis Medical Center and to be made aware that the hospital has already made significant positive reforms so as to be in accordance with the federal Affordable Health Care Act.

Legal, but immoral

IT may be technically legal, but it is immoral for Jim Welker to retire from the Cape Girardeau Public Schools, draw his retirement money and then go back to work for his salary. Taxpayers have been taken advantage of for too many years.

Depression avoided

SINCE 1928 there have been 13 presidents, seven Republicans (Hoover, Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush Sr., Bush Jr.) and six Democrats (FDR, Truman, JFK, Johnson, Carter and Clinton). Six of the seven Republican presidents had an unemployment increase while in office. Ronald Reagan is the only Republican president since 1928 to leave office with a lower unemployment rate. All six Democratic presidents had an unemployment decrease or it stayed the same while in office (the worst Democratic performance, Jimmy Carter, had the same unemployment rate when he left office as when he entered.) Viewing all presidents' four-year term gives an even more pronounced effect. Of Republican presidents' terms, unemployment has increased in seven of the nine terms. Of the Democratic presidents' 10 terms, the unemployment rate never increased. With the current president and his merry tribe there is no hope for a strong U.S. economy. Thank goodness another Republican caused depression has been avoided.

City littering

IF I drive in Cape Girardeau and throw litter out the car window, I am likely to be stopped and fined. However, the city recycling truck can go flying down the streets with paper and plastic spewing out the top and nothing is being done to fix that. I have talked to the drivers and they know it.

Bring troops home

GREAT speech, Mr. President. Just in time for the next election. You're going to bring 33,000 soldiers home. Come on, get on the ball. Bring them all home now.

Military casualties

I would like to make a comment on all the troops that are over there that are being killed underneath President Obama. When President Bush was in there, it seemed like we would only have one or two men die a day, which is awful, but since Obama's been president, if you look at the deaths it's five and six a day. Why isn't this being investigated? It seems there are more troops dying now under Obama than there were during the Bush years.

Inspections cost

CITY council members, did you get the message? We do not want to pay for inspections for a new position in the city government.

GOP should sacrifice

REPUBLICANS sure do sink their heels in the sand when any cuts pertain to them in any way, shape or form. They should be the first to sacrifice a small amount of their outrageous income if they really care about, as they say, the American people.

Thank you

I want to say thank you to the person who found my roll of paper towels that had fallen off my cart in the grocery store parking lot and picked them up and turned them in. I was able to get them back. Thank you very much for your kindness and for being a good and honest person. I really appreciate it, and I hope you have a blessed day.
