Cape Girardeau native Elizabeth Maki joins an elite class, selected as part of Teach for America 2011 corps.

Teach for America is the national corps of top recent college graduates who commit to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in the pursuit of educational equity, according to a news release.

Maki is a 2003 graduate of The Peddie School, a New Jersey boarding school, and 2007 graduate of Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. She joins Teach For America's incoming corps of 5,200 new teachers. This year. 48,000 individuals applied, and 11 percent were accepted.
