Cape Girardeau police are investigating an early Thursday morning shooting at Delaware Park that left a local 21-year-old man injured.

According Cape Girardeau Police Department spokesman Darin Hickey, the man suffered two gunshot wounds and scrapes and cuts after another man assaulted him at the park at Lexington Avenue and Old Sprigg Street Road.

The victim was in stable condition at an area hospital, Hickey said.

The victim told police at the hospital that he and two of his friends met at a Cape Girardeau business and drove to Delaware Park, where the suspect emerged as soon as they got out of the car. The victim tried to run, but the suspect allegedly struck him in the head, shot him and then stole money from his wallet, Hickey said.

One of the victim's friends was threatened with a weapon but was not injured, according to Hickey. The suspect fled the scene.

Hickey said the man could be facing felony charges, including armed criminal action and assault.
