The Southeast Missouri State University Department of Public Safety is working with the Cape Girardeau Police Department in seeking charges against a 20-year-old man who remains hospitalized after a shooting incident and car crash early Saturday morning.

Department of Public Safety director Doug Richards said his agency expects numerous charges to be filed against the man, who allegedly struck a university police vehicle while attempting to flee from Cape Girardeau police during a traffic stop at the Village on the Green apartment complex. Police stopped the vehicle after an earlier report of shots fired at a Cape Girardeau convenience store.

Officer Jon Broom was in the university police vehicle at the time it was hit. Assault of a law enforcement officer is among the charges police are seeking, Richards said.

Broom was not injured, but the vehicle sustained significant damage that rendered it inoperable, Richards said.

At the time of the crash, a firearm went off inside the suspect's vehicle and he suffered a gunshot wound to the right thigh.

That was the only shot fired at the Village on the Green, said Cape Girardeau police spokesman Darin Hickey. Police are analyzing shell casings recovered at Rhodes 101, 1126 N. Sprigg. St., where they responded at 1:35 a.m. Saturday to reports of a fight and shots being fired, Hickey said. Officers then located the suspects' vehicle, a gray Jeep, near the Village on the Green apartment complex after receiving a tip from university police and stopped the vehicle. A 21-year-old man and 24-year-old woman who were also in the vehicle are not facing any charges, Hickey said.

Two firearms found in the vehicle are being analyzed by police to check for connections to other area crimes, Hickey said.
