ALL of this terrible weather is indeed a message from God, as a Speak Out caller and Michelle Bachmann said. The message is that we should have paid attention to Al Gore.

Great reporting

IN response to a recent comment in Speak Out about Erin Ragan and the school board and consultant fiasco, I would also like to point out her and Scott Moyers' reporting on the SB40 board. The Missourian has made good hires.

Pronoun use

CONTRARY to the conventional wisdom among radical right-wingers (see David Limbaugh's columns), President Obama is not a narcissist whose use of the pronoun "I" proves it. In fact, according to "The Secret Life of Pronouns" by James Pennebaker, a researcher who does believe the use of pronouns reveals a lot about ourselves, President Obama ranks the lowest among modern presidents in the use of the pronoun "I."

History lesson

IT'S hard to believe, but maybe in the grand scheme of things future historians will not consider Sept. 11 to have been all that big of a deal. What else would explain why a majority of states still have no reference to this event in their social studies standards?

Dress code

SCOTT City schools should equally enforce the dress code for all students in grade school. My son must tuck his shirt in and wear a belt every day. Other students in his grade wear their shirts out, and they hang past their waist. Wearing a belt has also been a dress code issue that should be enforced by all. My understanding is that the teachers are responsible for their own classes. If this is true then they shouldn't show favoritism and enforce the dress code equally.

Class reunion

Limbaugh statement

MONDAY of last week, Rush Limbaugh made the profound statement that he didn't think the damage was all that bad from Hurricane Irene and didn't know what all the fuss was about. Then on Tuesday he expounded about the stupidity of shutting down the power for safety reasons in New York. Perhaps he would like to dip into his millions and help the victims of the "not so badly damaged" areas all along the east coast.

Get married

IN a recent listing of birth announcements, there were 10 new babies. Five of those were born to people who have different last names. Why don't people want to commit to being a family so the babies grow up with parents that have the same name? To the girls out there, don't have sex with someone who doesn't love you enough to marry you.
