Progressive Club

The Progressive Club met Aug. 23 at University of Missouri Extension Center to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the club. There were 14 members and 12 former members present: Shirley Bock, Ann Bodenstein, Madge Burchett, Barbara Hartle, Pat Kaiser, Alice Koeppel, Barbara Lohr, Agnes Morton, Mary Sue Oldham, Margaret Pfeiffer, Sheri Rowland, Kay Sneed, and Vera Jean Voges. The evening was spent enjoying appetizers, visiting with old friends, and looking through all the old scrapbooks going back 50 years.

A very brief business meeting was held, presided over by president JoAnn Adams. Elvia Perical gave the treasurer's report and minutes from last meeting were read by secretary, Jean Dudley.

Joan Battle reminded the group that the September meeting will be a field trip to SEMO Grain -- a food processing plant -- at the Port Authority near Scott City. Guests may be invited.

Shirley Beggs reported that the October meeting is still a mystery trip with time to be announced later. Becky Heuer reminded members that the December meeting is on Dec. 4, when we will go to Cape Bible Chapel for the Southeast Showcase, followed by dinner at Lil Miss Muffin & Stuff in Jackson.

New McKendree UMW

The New McKendree United Methodist Women met Tuesday in the church fellowship hall. The meeting was opened with the reciting of the UMW Purpose.

The minutes were read by Gale King, secretary, and Marilyn Fronabarger reviewed the treasurer's report. They were approved as read.

Mary Klaproth, president, introduced four guests: Tina Crites, Lenora Dobbs, Wanda Mitchell-Fisk and Pam Buck.

Edith Eggers, secretary of program resources, announced that she had four "Response" magazines and four books donated by Amy Cook available for those who wished to use them.

Klaproth announced that the social action projects for September and October were the Festival of Sharing items and items to be given to the Food Pantry.

Klaproth thanked those who helped with the reception and dinner served for Pastor Dave Israel and his family in July. They were: June Engel, Laura Jo Smith, Julie Combs, Elwanda Corbin, Sue Jones, Amy Thompson, Linda Thompson and Klaproth.

Amy Cook gave a report on the Mission Ribbons available. Doris Dace moved to give Amy $30 to purchase more ribbons. Mary Ann Maeltzer seconded. The motion was approved.

The Wesleyan Circle won the attendance ribbon with five members present.

Engel reported on the bereavement dinners served in August. She asked for suggestions for the luncheon menu for the Fall District meeting to be held Oct. 22 at New McKendree. Four circles are to bring 25 servings of muffins, rolls, doughnuts, etc., and the Mary and Martha Circle will bring fruit for the early morning refreshments. The Hope Circle will decorate the tables and the other circles will bring cakes for the luncheon.

The nominating committee was reminded to be preparing a slate of officers to be voted on at the Oct. 11 meeting. Laura Jo Smith, Sue Smith, and Combs are on the committee.

The Mission team meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 26t in the fellowship hall.

Budget plans will be discussed at the meeting.

Shirley Patterson and Cook gave a program on the Mini School of Missions.

The next meeting will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 11. The United Methodist Men will be invited.

The meeting closed with a reading from the Prayer Calendar. A salad luncheon followed the meeting.

VFW Auxiliary 3838

Deborah Griffin of Jackson and a member of Clippard Wilson Taylor Auxiliary 3838 attended the 98th National Convention of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Aug. 27 through Sept. 1 held in San Antonio, Texas.

The convention marked the beginning of her 2011-2012 term as National Director for the Veterans & Family Support program and the completion of her two-year term on the National Council of Administration, which governs the auxiliary between national conventions.

A highlight of the convention was the announcement of the Outstanding Department Presidents in the 11 membership groups at the National President's luncheon. Other highlights included the opportunity for members to view the eight winning Young American Creative Patriotic Art entries and the Buddy Poppy displays in addition to attend several joint events with the VFW.
