It's good to see families, churches and other groups take the initiative to meet needs of those who have fallen on hard times. One local couple having done just that is Shirley and Danny Hollowell.
More than a year ago, the Hollowells approached the Delta School District about purchasing the soon-to-be vacant elementary school. The couple's goal was to turn the 30,000-square-foot building and 15-acre property into a transitional housing shelter. An agreement was reached, and recently the couple -- who operate what is now the Amen Center, a not-for-profit organization -- took in a husband and wife along with their dog who were homeless.
The center is Christian-based, and those using the facility are expected to help with building improvements and upkeep as well as attend an hour of Bible study every day. Volunteers from several area churches have also come on board to help with painting and other improvements, and some area businesses have donated items to help furnish the living areas.
The Hollowells and other local volunteers should be commended for their efforts and willingness to help others. We wish them all the best going forward.
