The flood of 1986 continues its strange antics, inundating areas that have never flooded before and bypassing areas that usually flood.

A Cape Girardeau man who, despite help from city hall, has been unable to prevent heavy trucks from traveling the street on which he lives has taken matters into his own hands; John Edmundson, who lives in the 400 block of South Ellis Street, has put up directional signs and has started stopping truckers himself, telling them not to use the street.

50 years ago: Oct. 9, 1961

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- The federal government's surplus commodities distribution program will be put into effect for the first time in Bollinger County this week; distribution to the 1,560 eligible people will be in the Jones Restaurant building, where a warehouse has been set up.

The Missouri State Park Board, meeting in Jefferson City, gives approval to local construction of an impressive monument over the grave of "Princess" Otahki in Trail of Tears State Park; the pagoda-type marker was designed by architect John L.E. Boardman.

75 years ago: Oct. 9, 1936

Although stung as many as 75 times by bees late yesterday, Barbara Ann, 2-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond F. Moore of Cape Girardeau, is expected to suffer no ill effects; the child had aroused a hive of bees at the rear of her home and was surrounded by them when her mother found her.

The city is considering special regulations for Main Street that might include one-way traffic; city officials and the police department have been studying conditions on the street for some time, and merchants at a meeting Wednesday decided to test sentiment on a one-way plan.

100 years ago: Oct. 9, 1911

The October term of the federal court opens with Judge D.F. Dyer on the bench and a good-sized docket to dispose of; there are several cases to be taken up by the grand jury, and which will be docketed, some of them being tried at this term of court.

Ernest Rau, the Normal School football player who had his sternum bone broken in the St. Louis University game, is able to be about again after a week's confinement in his room.
