A Cape Girardeau man was seriously injured after he struck a deer with his motorcycle on Route Y Tuesday night.

Joseph E. Melvin, 50, was driving his 2005 Kawasaki on Route Y just east of Route V at about 7:10 p.m. when a deer ran in front of his bike and he collided with the animal, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The impact threw Melvin off his motorcycle.

Melvin was taken to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau with serious injuries.

According to the highway patrol, Melvin was wearing a helmet.
