Work should be completed today or tomorrow on the repaving of a 15-by-29-foot section of the intersection of North Main and Mill streets; the project was necessitated by the settling of some of the concrete pavement in an area that was reconstructed only last year.

WITTENBURG, Mo. -- Coast guard officials say the offloading of 4.28 million gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel from several tanker barges that went aground in the Mississippi River north of here Dec. 12 has been completed.

The former superintendent of Cape Girardeau public schools, John N. Crocker, 81, dies at a Columbia, Mo., nursing home after an illness of several years; Crocker was superintendent here from 1913 to 1925, after serving one year as principal of the high school.

Reese Morgan, formerly of Cape Girardeau and now of Memphis, Tenn., lands at Municipal Airport in his twin engine C-123 Air Force troop carrier to see his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Morgan of Cape Girardeau; Reese Morgan is in the Air Force reserve.

75 years ago: Dec. 22, 1936

The city council has decided to revise the city ordinance licensing and controlling hucksters, so as to have the fruit vendors keep on the move; there has been trouble with fruit sellers parking their wagons on streets for hours at a time, clogging traffic in the streets and sidewalks.

The Cape Girardeau Drum and Bugle Corps has been invited to participate in the inauguration of governor-elect Lloyd C. Stark at Jefferson City, Mo., on Jan. 11; whether the American Legion Golden Troopers will take part in the festivities hasn't been determined.

100 years ago: Dec. 22, 1911

The full report of the special auditors made of the county government was presented to the county court last week and read in full; however, certain prominent men of the county objected to the court's acceptance of the report; as a result, the court delayed acceptance of the audit; the report shows irregularities in the books of several county officials.

Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Head of Dallas are in the city visiting Mrs. Head's parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.W. Bowman; this is the first visit of Mrs. Head, formerly Miss Mollie Bowman, since her marriage last December.
