A fire that ripped through a garage behind a Cape Girardeau day care and spread to an adjacent business Wednesday night is under police investigation.

A fire that ripped through a garage behind a Cape Girardeau day care and spread to an adjacent business Wednesday night is under police investigation.

The Cape Girardeau Fire Department responded to a fire at 1530 Independence St. at 10:20 p.m. Wednesday and found heavy fire in a garage behind the facility, according to a news release. Firefighters got the fire under control quickly but noticed it spread to nearby business Showcase Technologies. The blaze caused smoke damage to the office.

The cause is as yet unknown, according to the release. The fire appears suspicious and is under investigation, Cape Girardeau police spokesman Darin Hickey said. No one was in custody Thursday morning.

The fire caused an estimated $25,000 worth of damage to the garage and $6,000 worth of smoke damage to the office.
