Election season is in full gear. Last Tuesday, the first day candidates could file to run in the August primary election, a number of individuals officially threw their hats in the ring.

This year's slew of candidates in Cape Girardeau County was largely due to open races for public administrator and assessor. The current public administrator, Phyllis Schwab, announced in January that she would not seek another term for the job she was first elected to 12 years ago. Assessor Jerry Reynolds, who has served in the position for 36 years, also announced earlier this year that he would not seek re-election.

As of Tuesday, 11 candidates had filed to run for public administrator and three had officially joined the race for assessor. Other positions up for election at the county level include sheriff, 1st and 2nd district county commissioners, coroner and treasurer. The last day to file to run in the August primary election is March 27.

Other dates to note in this election year:

* Today: Last day to register to vote for the April general municipal election.

We commend those who run for public office. While much of the country's attention is now on the presidential race, there are many important issues addressed at the local and state levels. Between now and August (April for the municipal election) the candidates will seek to earn your vote. And if you have not yet registered to vote, we encourage you to do so.
