While it is still unclear if the two incidents are connected, unknown amounts of prescription medications were reported stolen during burglaries that took place at pharmacies in Cape Girardeau and Scott City, police said Tuesday.

Cape Girardeau police responded about 6:20 a.m. to an alarm at John's Pharmacy, 2001 Independence St., to find that a window had been broken out of the building's north side, said department spokesman Darin Hickey. After police secured the building, it was discovered that medication was taken from the business, Hickey said, but exactly what kind or how much won't be known until an inventory can be taken.

Scott City police reported a similar incident that took place at Medicap Pharmacy at 2220 Main St., said Lt. Casey Dodd. Shortly before midnight Monday, officers discovered that the pharmacy's front door had been kicked in and that medication had been taken. An inventory is being recorded of Medicap's stock as well, Dodd said.

Officers from both departments said Tuesday morning that no arrests had been made, but that the burglaries were still under investigation. Both Hickey and Dodd said they did not know whether the burglaries were committed by the same people, but acknowledged the similarities. The owners of the pharmacies did not return phone calls Tuesday morning.
