Mo. House endorses initiative petition proposal

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri House members have endorsed a measure requiring supporters of initiative petitions to collect signatures in all of the state's congressional districts to get their proposals on a statewide ballot.

Initiative petition campaigns currently must gather signatures from two-thirds of Missouri's congressional districts. House members gave first-round approval Tuesday to a proposed constitutional amendment that would require at least some signatures be gathered from every congressional district.

Sponsoring House member Tony Dugger, a Republican from Hartville, says the change would help ensure more Missourians have a say in what appears on the ballot.

The proposed constitutional amendment needs another vote before moving to the Senate. If approved by the Legislature, it would go before voters later this year.
