25 years ago: May 20, 1987

Officials with Southeast Hospital announce the addition of an air ambulance service that administrator David Niswonger says should have a "significant impact" on the 24 Missouri and Illinois counties that the hospital serves; service should begin about Aug. 1.

The Scott City City Council has voted to sell the present city hall-fire station and consolidate the fire station and city offices in the new Scott City Municipal Building, one block east; the police department has already moved into the new municipal building.

50 years ago: May 20, 1962

William L. Mueller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Mueller of Cape Girardeau, is ordained into the ministry during an evening ceremony at Peace Lutheran Church at Steelville, Ill.

Recognition Day, honoring Dr. and Mrs. R.C. Holliday, is observed at Centenary Methodist Church; in June, Dr. Holliday will retire from active ministerial duties after 50 years of service, the last 14 as pastor of Centenary Church.

75 years ago: May 20, 1937

Judge James A. Kinder of Cape Girardeau has been elevated to the office of grand commander of the Grand Commandery of the Knights Templar in Missouri, which closed out its conclave yesterday at Kirksville, Mo.

What Teachers College means to Cape Girardeau from a commercial point of view is partially revealed in a survey made by the college YMCA and YWCA, which found that faculty and students have spent $170,237.06, exclusive of room rent, in this city since the fall term began last September.

100 years ago: May 20, 1912

Linus Sanford, 73, died Saturday at Jackson, one of the best known residents of Cape Girardeau County; his father, Henry Sanford, was one of the first school teachers of the Cape Girardeau School District and for many years was county circuit clerk; his mother was Mary Daugherty; Linus Sanford received his law degree from Harvard and began practicing law in Southeast Missouri in 1861; he was a member of the 26th Missouri Legislature in 1872.

The hardware firm of Meyer & Schwab in Haarig has been dissolved and the store sold to C.H.S. Meyer and W.F. Suedekum; the former has been with the store for some time, while the latter was with the Riverside Lumber Co.
