SIKESTON, Mo. -- A Sikeston man was arrested on drug and weapon charges.

According to the probable-cause statement released by Scott County prosecutor Paul Boyd, Sikeston Department of Public Safety executed a search warrant in the 200 block of Dorothy Street on April 12 in Sikeston. Upon searching the residence, an assault rifle, ammunition and about 15 grams of cocaine were found on the bed.

Melvin Applewhite, 27, was arrested on a warrant for charges of first-degree burglary and second-degree assault.

According to the probable-cause statement, Applewhite told officers he purchased the rifle for protection due to his residence being shot at. He said that he got the cocaine from a person who lives in Cape Girardeau and was selling for a while.

Applewhite is a felon who is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition. He is in custody in the Scott County Jail with bond set at $100,000 cash.
