Excavation for the construction of the junior high school may begin tomorrow by the Harrison Brothers Construction Co.; the firm was issued a permit for the project Tuesday.

As part of a continuing remodeling and modernization program, the Rialto Theater has installed all new theater chairs; other improvements of recent months include new air conditioning, CinemaScope screen, carpeting and restrooms; owner of the theater is Shirley Klarsfeld.

CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Ten men are in custody in an investigation of the theft of a 1,500-pound dipper from a dragline machine on a levee near Dorena, Mo.; the dipper, valued at $1,500 and made mostly of aluminum, is found in the bed of a motor truck being driven through Wyatt, Mo.; the men intended to dismantle the dipper and sell it as junk.

Ed Barenkamp has been appointed a probationary police patrolman on the Cape Girardeau force; he is the third patrolman appointed within the last three weeks to fill vacancies, the others being John T. Hanebrink and Fred Schneider.

1912

John Premermann, the genial postal clerk, has had quite an experience trying to get rid of a letter addressed to "Old Maid's Hall"; the letter was sent to Leming Hall, to all the millinery establishments of the city, and to a number of boarding houses where teachers live, but in each case it was indignantly spurned.

O.N. Yarbrough returned from St. Louis last night, where he had been buying equipment for his Broadway restaurant.
